Move over ‘Spiderman 3′, there’s a new summer blockbuster in town.
As predicted, ‘The Dark Knight’ made a massive amount of money during it’s opening weekend, and even broke a record…or two…oorrr eight.
It overtook Spidey’s $151.1 million in May 2007 by earning a record $155.34 million in its first weekend. Oh, and it was thus far, Hollywood’s biggest weekend ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros (distributors of the film), said,
We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did.
According to him, it will surpass the $200 million mark by the end of the week.
The film, also beat ‘Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith’ with a $18.5 million dollar midnight opening.
Other achievements:
-Largest number of opening theaters with 4,366.
-Biggest IMAX midnight previews with $640,000.
-Biggest single day gross in box office history with $67.850 million (Spiderman 3 had $59,841,919 in 2007).
-Biggest opening weekend gross for IMAX release in box office history with $6,214,061 million in 94 screens with $66,107 per theatre.
-Biggest July Opening Ever, beating out 2006’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which brought in $135,634,554.
